MYOGA with Corey and Raya
On my way to Landmark Dept. Store, I passed this techy shop right along the pedestrian walkway that traverses Dela Rosa St. (right before Powerbooks). Right at their window is a huge picture of Raya Mananquil who is a known model but lately, has been making more waves as a yogini. She and Corey Willis run MYOGA.
MYOGA does not have its own shala as of now. Corey and Raya teach yoga in the private comfort of your home or any location you wish. Rates depend on the number of people taking the class.
I got this info from the blog ShopCrazy. It is a post dated 2006 but since they have no website yet, I decided to post about them so that readers are aware that they do teach yoga upon arrangement.
And for a great photo gallery of Corey and Raya at their Toby’s Sports photo shoot, click here.

What is Hatha Yoga?
Hatha Yoga is perhaps the most time-tested, powerful method of self-improvement known to man. It utilizes mental focus and deep breathing while performing a series of specific postures. On a superficial level, Yoga appears to be primarily physical, but what makes this system radically different from western “workouts” is the remarkable internal impact of the practice. Hatha Yoga is a combination of:
Mind (calm mental/emotional focus)
Energy (life-force, cultivation through breathing practices)
Body (movement and postures)
It is the harmonizing of these three components that makes the yoga experience unique and profound. Whereas traditional fitness regimes aim at health and beauty only, Hatha Yoga aims for a fulfilling and meaningful life, with health and beauty as a wonderful side effect. Yoga is also a non-competitive pursuit which aims at reducing the egoistic mental tendencies of the individual. You are often told in a yoga class to “please leave your ego at the door with your slippers”.
The Many Benefits of Yoga
Yoga is a 5,000-year-old mind-and-body science for wellness and self-healing. With regular practice, yoga offers:
- Greater strength, flexibility, balance
- Controlled weight and appetite
- Increased energy
- Enhanced memory and concentration
- Better posture
- A stronger immune system
- Reduced stress
Preparing for a Yoga Session
Wear comfortable clothing that is easy to move in. T-shirts or tank tops with shorts or leggings are suggested. Baggy t-shirts or long baggy pants are not recommended. Bare feet are essential.
Yoga should be practiced on an empty stomach. Allow at least two hours after a meal. Food can be taken thirty minutes after class.
Avoid applying lotion on your feet and hands to prevent slippage on the yoga mat.
Make sure your home or location has enough floor space to lay the student’s yoga mat(s), as well as the teacher’s. Silence with the least amount of distractions is a must.
And of course, you need a yoga mat. If you do not have one, please let us know and we will be happy to lend you one.

FAQ’s
Do I have to be flexible to do yoga?
No.In fact, inflexible people often have more to gain from yoga than naturally flexible people who sometimes miss the point of the practice. With yoga, the journey is more important than the destination because the challenges that arise from tightness, inflexibility, and discomfort in the body provide us with the opportunity to learn, grow, accept and heal.
Is yoga a religion?
Yoga is not a religion. People of all faiths practice yoga. At the heart of yoga is a transformational component which some call “self-improvement”, and others call “spirituality”.One of the great powers of yoga is that we practice non-dogmatic, unifying precepts that are embraced by virtually all religious, spiritual and self-improvement paths.
Kindness
Honesty
Mindfulness
Respect
Cleanliness
These precepts promote harmony and reverberate throughout all of our relationships, intimate, business or casual. How we behave with one another both in and out of yoga determine how we affect the world.
Can I hurt myself doing yoga?
Yoga can be potentially injurious if a person practices without proper guidance, understanding, and respect for the body in the yoga asanas (postures). A competitive approach to yoga very often results in injury. We should always remember to respect the body and its limitations. The benefits of yoga come when the yogi is at ease with his or her mind, body and emotions.
Do I have to become a vegetarian to practice yoga?
Patanjali, who wrote the Yoga Sutras, states the principle of ahimsa or non-harming in his yogic text. This applies not only to human beings, but also to all sentient beings, including animals. It is not necessary to become a vegetarian to practice yoga, but dedicated yogis greatly believe in compassion for all living creatures.
