  1. Hi, maybe you can post a request on yogafinder.com. Good luck! I’d like to find out if there are any yoga classes in the Bacolod area.

Jane: Hi, Dizzy. Thanks for stopping by. Yes, I have gone to yogafinder.com but did not seem to see one based in Bacolod. Let me try to ask around here in Manila. Am sure someone would know if there is a yoga studio in your area.

  3. Hi! I tried bikram yoga a few weeks back. Half way thru the session I there was a tingling feeling on my back. the next day I could not get up because i had a terrible headache. What caused this headache? thanks!

Jane: Hi Millie! First of all, I am sorry to hear about your experience. There are so many things that could have caused it and I would not even try to hazard a guess as I do not know your actual situation (like your age, health condition, yoga experience, etc). And what I am about to tell you should not be taken as gospel truth either.

First, you could try to talk to your bikram yoga teacher, explain what happened and see if he/she has an explanation for it that makes sense to you. I have read introductions in some bikram yoga studios that say feeling faint is often experienced by beginners precisely because the body is only just starting to detox itself from years of toxins taken in. Whether that is true or not and whether the headache is your body’s reaction to detoxification, I do not know.

Second, it is possible that bikram yoga is not for everyone and you need to find out if that is the type of yoga for you. I choose to stay with hatha vinyasa yoga which is the style taught by my teacher Pio. I have a small build, need to gain weight (a lot of weight!) and live in a tropical country. I cannot imagine myself starting off with a heated room when my body already naturally builds up heat even in room temp when I do vinyasa yoga. I do not need to lose all those calories from sweating out in a heated room. But that is me. It is different for others and I have friends doing bikram who swear by it.

So in the end, I may have no answer for you but you need to seek it out yourself. But do not give up on yoga because oftentimes, perseverance despite initial discomfort (or even pain) will be replaced by benefits which I experience up to now. I hope you find a yoga style that will be just right for you. And do update me on it too. Good luck and namaste!

    • Hi..jane..but i would like to comment on willie’s experience about bikram yoga. First of all,you should have a trained master who will guide all the way. Not all masters are well-trained to do that thing. We must also note that Yoga is considered to be an exercise nowadays, but in history, yoga is building a connection between you and the universe.
All kinds of yoga are correlated with each other with different poses to choose from. We must all take into consideration that too much meditation could open your inner self into wider arrays..once you open the so-called “kundalini”, you have to take care of it. Try to research on kundali syndrome to know what I’m talking about. Since bikram yoga is powerful cuz you are opening up the fire core in you. In this generation, its hard to find someone who are really practicng yoga by faith. So be wary of it. If you have those symptoms, do not go to medical practitioner cuz they have a different approach on that thing. You should seek a real master by faith so he could give you advices and heals you too.

    • Hi, there! My name is Cris and I am a metaphysician who practices yoga and meditation. I have a PhD in Metaphysical Psychology and I’m also a Reiki practitioner. I would like to comment on Millie’s experience from an energetic perspective….

Tingling sensations along the spine or back are normal for beginners (or even seasoned practioners) of yoga. It’s a physical manifestation of your ‘kundalini’ awakening. Bikram can be very fast with that. The headache is an adjustment of your energies. You got a bit too much of it when your system is not entirely ready for that amount of energy. Your body’s reaction is normal. Others have different reactions, some fall asleep, some feel draggy, some feel energized. Your body will get used to it in time. Just allow the energies to settle. You must not be anxious. When I get these tingling sensations, I’m very excited and perform Reiki (energetic healing) to plants, animals, children or anyone who comes along. šŸ™‚ I always keep things in a positive light…. But if it still concerns you, you make seek a Reiki master or a Pranic healer for help.

      • Hi there,

So gratefull to have found true yoginis here in Philippines. I completely agree with the very knowlegdable advises here. It is very good info for the people who do yoga as exercise. Comming from Denmark where I enjoyed doing hot yoga during winthertime. Spending a day out and about in 2-10 celcius and then getting in the hot yoga shala with 34 celcius is like the best to get completely warm throug every part of my body and feel energy boosting. On top of the wisdom you are given above here – water is another very importan issue. You need to drink a lot more than normal because you do swet a lot more through bikram and hot yoga. And since it takes an hour for your body to respond to the water after you drink it, you should drink at least one liter or two of water an hour or more before you enter the hot shala. Just the same with saunas and steemrooms. Lack of water gives headache.

Im looking forward for your reply.

Have a nice day and God bless.

    Jane:
Hi Juvy. It is always advisable to seek your OB-Gyne’s advice but considering you had the C-section over a year ago makes yoga feasible, I would think. I suggest you refer to the studios listed in this blog for those available near Alabang, check their websites and give them a call. Good luck!

However, if you live in the Quezon City, Pasig or Makati areas, there are some located there. Feel free to contact me again if I can be of further help!

  10. Hi Jane!
I am so happy to find such an informative website on Yogalife in Manila! I was even more excited when looking through your instructors that I was listed as a “New addition!”

    Thank you for including me!

On another note, I’ve been searching the net for a couple of hours. I’m looking for someone who teaches Kundalini Yoga here in Manila.

I’m also on the look out for an Ayurveda Practioner who would have experience with Chakra healings or balancing.

Any ideas on where to find these types of people who can help me on my journey?

Thanks and keep up the great work!

    Namaste
    Michelle

Jane: Hi Michelle! Thank you for visiting!

I have asked some friends about Kundalini Yoga and it does not seem like there is anyone teaching this yet in the Philippines. I could be wrong though.

As for the Ayurveda practitioner, I am asking around. A friend who is into chakra healing is in the US but coming back April. I will email you on developments privately. Hope we can stay in touch!

  11. Hi,
Just wanna ask if you happen to know if there are any yoga studios in Davao. Thanks.

Jane: You know, Alex, that is the reason Mindanao isn’t on my list — yet. I can’t seem to find yoga shalas based in Davao or anywhere in Mindanao. I hope anyone from there reading this who has knowledge of actual yoga studios (not gyms) will post a comment here with a URL, if any.

My friend Fritz will be relocating in Davao next month. He’s originally from Davao but studied in Manila and worked in Cebu.

He might offer some classes there. I’ll keep you posted when he does.

Fritz was also a member of Team Yoga 2002. He trained with Bela Lipat and received his 200-hour teaching certificate from Fitness First Malaysia.

Jane: Gosh, answered prayers so soon! Thanks for the heads up, Jon! And I hope Alex sees this post so we will both be on the lookout for Fritz’ classes.

  15. Hi Jane,

Your blog’s fabulous, it’s so informative! Well done! šŸ™‚

I was hoping you could help me – I used to do yoga in 2001-2002, and I think it was mostly ashtanga yoga. The studio was initially in Pasay then they moved to Makati (on Pasay Road, across Park Square). Around 2004 I think they relocated to San Antonio Village but I haven’t been there, and I checked their website but it hasn’t been updated in years and there’s no schedule of classes.

I understand there’s a number of studios offering ashtanga yoga, but I prefer to go to one that doesn’t look like a dance hall or a gym room, if you know what I mean. The studios I used to go to looked really homey and had great ambience for yoga – is there anything like that in Metro Manila these days?

I moved to Melbourne over three years ago so I have no clue – I’ll be in Manila for two weeks next month and would love to attend yoga classes while I’m there. To give you an idea what the studio I used to go to looked like, please check out Ashtanga Yoga Centre of Melbourne’s website, http://www.ashtangamelbourne.com.au/contact.html (I’m in no way connected with them, and from what I remember the studio on Pasay Road looked much better). I could send you the url of the studio I used to go to, in case you’re familiar with them.

I’d greatly appreciate your help! Hope to hear from you soon!

    Thanks muchly!

    Namaste,

    Ivy Rose

Jane: Hi Ivy. Looks like you are in the Makati area. Well, Yoga Manila just moved from their long-time studio in Makati to another one across the street which, from pictures, may be what you are looking for. I have not checked out their new place yet. They are sharing this space with the foundation that teaches tai chi and qigong and the place looks new, clean and great for meditation as well.
    Here is the link: GoodQiCircle

    Hope this helps.

  19. hello jane. it nice to find someone as passionate with yoga as i am. i used to dance, and since i couldn’t find a good dance teacher at this point ( everyone seems to be in hongkong disneyland ), yoga seemed the next logical outlet for me. yoga, i am proud to say, is my new passion.

anyway, there is a new bikram yoga studio ( by new player Joy Geronca ) in Eastwood City. Bikram Yoga Eastwood is located at the ground level of One Orchard Road Condominium in Eastwood City ( near the church ). you may get in touch with them at 972-1838

i love their studio, it is very intimate, very clean with high ceiling for a change, and they have very good teachers
as well ( hello betty, ginger and of course joy! )

i wish you could include Bikram Yoga Eastwood in your list.

  22. Dear Jane,

I’ve just started Yoga in Ananda Marga Yoga Center in Capitol Area, Cebu City this week. The past two sessions were very nice and educational and now I’m really happy with Yoga. I actually do it in conjunction with my jogging/running.

I got a problem though… The course I’m going through is Ashtanga (prolly spelled wrong) Yoga. A Yogi is even there, unfortunately, I feel so limited in the time. Beginner’s class is only twice a week, to add to that… Yoga One Studio near my place has closed down. Do you know anyone from Cebu who could provide private lessons?

It would be very helpful if I have private lessons since I’m pretty busy most of the time plus I love having personalized instruction. šŸ™‚

    I hope you can help

But I was advised that I should join classes ea early as possible for correct posture. I am now trying to find a yoga studio in Makati or in Malate, Manila with affordable rates and flexible schedule. 46. Is there any center available in metro manila, I found out that there are centers in makati and quezon city but none in manila….

@Armi – The yoga centers are concentrated mostly in the South, Makati, Pasig and QC. But I think there are individuals who teach yoga, just not sure where. I’ll keep a lookout.

  52. Jane
I will be visiting the Cebu area in a couple of weeks and am trying to find a yoga studio. I do many types of yoga here in the US but would love to find someone who does kundalini yoga which in my favorite practice. In reading your site, it looks like the only studio in Cebu has closed down. I will be there on Jan.18 so if there is anything you find, I would greatly appreciate it. Happy New Year

  53. Hi! Do you know of any yoga studios in Bonifacio Global City?

    Thanks!

    Comment by Sol | January 19, 2010 | Reply

  54. I think the true challenge you will have is finding the other yogic groups and techniques that aren’t as popular or easily accessible. There are such arcane groups but practice different types as a periphery activity and their main practice is advertised as something else. It will be interesting if you can find some of those unlike the more overt ones you have mentioned. šŸ™‚

  56. Hi!

I am having the thought of starting yoga and Iā€™d like to ask your suggestion on what type of yoga is fit for me. I am a college student and have an average physique. Clearing my mind and learning to focus on things is what I essentially seek because I am having a hard time studying nowadays due to inevitable problems. And also Iā€™d like to ask if you know a studio around Ermita, Manila or perhaps studios nearby the latter. Kindly e-mail me your reply. Thank you.

Can you recommend yoga instructors who can conduct private or group sessions at home or in the office (Makati and Taguig areas)?

  58. Hi Jane! I live in Lipa and used to practice yoga at The Farm at San Benito when they still made it available to the public. Now you can only take yoga classes if you’re a patient and it seems rather impractical to pay P4,000 each time I want to take an hour and a half yoga class. Would you know of anyone who can teach me yoga here in the Batangas area? I’d really appreciate it.

  59. Hi ! im jherlyn im from ortgas pasig city i am teaching yoga combination with pilates around makati, can you help me to promote it?? thanks hope to hear from you soon.

@Jherlyn – I am sorry but I normally do not promote yoga classes. Rather, I simply list yoga shalas or special yoga workshops that are available in the metro. Please send me the URL of your website that has the yoga classes in them and I will include you in a list of yoga shalas. Please include also some information about your self especially where you took your certification as a yoga teacher and the style of yoga you teach. Namaste.

  65. Hi,
I’m looking for a yoga studio near the bicutan/sucat area, or somewhere in ortigas. I’ve always wanted to take up yoga but had reservations coz I’m overweight, what type of yoga will be best for me as a beginner?

@Marites – Hi and thanks for dropping by. On this page you will find a list of yoga shalas and location. In my practice, I’ve had ‘classmates’ who are overweight. For as long as you get a doctor’s clearance, yoga should be okay for anyone. However, I suggest you try a class that offers gentle or restorative yoga. That way, you will be introduced to yoga with modified poses that will not unduly strain a beginner.

  66. Yoga looks simple but is quite challenging once you get into it. The though of doing downward dog, or warrior one, gets my muscles quivering in anticipation of the exercise. I don’t go to any yoga studio, but just do yoga once a week in the comfort of my own condo.

  69. Flow Yoga Manila along Commonwealth Avenue is not worth the try. I have been attending classes there for months and the instructors are very inconsistent. Class become cancelled at the very last minute and the owner-teacher is not even certified to teach yoga and she is still teaching. People are very rude in this Yoga Center. i would rather enroll in Flowyogaqc in UP.

@Ms. Wellness – Thank you for writing. I am publishing this in the hope that your specific observations may be addressed by the shala concerned as I am not familiar with them. All I can say is that their website says the owner-teacher is certified by a yoga institute. Is she still the owner? I am not always in a position to check all teacher certifications so I strongly urge all my readers to check that yoga teachers are duly certified to teach yoga.

  80. Hi there,
Great website! I am from Europe and considering to come over to Philippines around mid October – mid November for holiday. Would like to go to a island with a nice beach hut with snorkeling AND if possible would like to do a week of yoga. I am still an ashtanga beginner, but might like to tackle the full primary. I am only half way now … I found a few expensive resorts, but was wondering if it would not be possible to just go to a nice place, book myself into a pleasant place at the beach and walk every morning to a nearby place for a yoga practise. Would something like that exist?
Looking forward to your valued advice!
